List of Films Watched - 1971

This is an alphabetical list of films I've watched and the score I gave them out of 10 after the first viewing. Scores are based purely on entertainment value or more specifically how much they entertained me at the time of watching. My target is to watch 300 feature films and 300 short films from this year. Only the films that fit this blog will have their own separate entry.

A mildly interesting, if strange film. It definitely gets better in the second half. I think there were quite a few films of this ilk in the early 1970s; a little off-centre without really achieving cult status. If you do decide to see it, look out for Linda Blair as the only child in the film and also for Anne Ramsey (Throw Momma from the Train) in her first screen appearance.

I watched this for the first time in its entirety in January 2024 so I think some of the impact was lost on me compared to those whose saw it during its first run in the movie theatres. It is still a great film which has been copied many times with many variations. Linda Blair was only 13 years old when filming began and she puts in a memorable performance. I know that the voice of the demon is not her own, but that's kind of the point. The atmosphere and the build up to the exorcism is slow but this only increases the tension. Future versions of this format look for places to include more jump scares and fancy effects, but this film does a far better job of achieving its goal.
